Pro Bono Panel
The Centro Hispano LITC handles approximately 300 cases per year. Taxpayers with current income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level are eligible for our LITC’s services. Cases at all stages of tax controversy are accepted, including exam, appeals, refund claims, litigation in the United States Tax Court or the refund fora, and tax collections cases, including Collection Due Process Hearings and offers-in-compromise.
Volunteer attorneys, accountants and enrolled agents form a vital component to taxpayers. Without them, low income taxpayers would be left a drift in the community without direction to solve their tax issues. The LITC conducts in-depth interviews with potential clients, screening cases for income eligibility and merit. Case referrals are only made after the volunteer agrees to meet with the client. Of course, the volunteer can still decline the case after meeting with the client and exploring the merits further. After referral, LITC staff members and volunteers are available for back-up technical support and guidance regarding procedure. LITC staff also provides in-house representation in emergency or noncomplex cases and cases from geographic areas without volunteers
Centro Hispano LITC has an ongoing need for volunteers to assist with its caseload. If you are interested in becoming a member of LITC's Pro Bono Panel, please take a moment to send us an email [email protected].
Centro Hispano has other volunteer opportunities such as translation, fundraising, clerical work, grant writing and graphic design. If you are not a tax professional and you would like to volunteer for CTLP in some other capacity, we would be delighted to speak with you. Please call Centro Hispano at (801) 655-0258.
